The Legal Information Clinic at McGill provides a free Commissioner for Oaths service to members of both the McGill and Montreal communities.
Commissioners for oaths are empowered to administer oaths. For example, this means that they can officialize an oath that a person takes before them affirming that the information contained in a certain document is true, or that a certain document is a true copy of the original. However, commissioners for oaths cannot certify that a document is a true copy of its original, or that its contents are true; they can only administer another person’s oath.
If you have any questions with regards to the powers and limitations of commissions for oaths, please contact the Registry of Commissioners of Oaths by calling 1-800-465-4949 and selecting option 4.
We invite you to communicate with the organization requiring your documents to make sure Commissioner for Oaths is the service you need.
If you believe you need the services of a notary rather than a commissioner for oaths, you can call 1-800-NOTAIRE.
