The LICM offers a court accompaniment program that is available to both McGill students and community members. Senior student volunteers are available to accompany clients to the Régie du logement (rental board) and the Small Claims Court. Volunteers will accompany clients to court, provide moral support, and explain procedure.
To request court accompaniment, please call the Clinic at (514) 398- 6792. You must have a hearing date at the Régie du logement or the Small Claims Court to confirm the accompaniment.
The court accompaniment program was launched in 2017 as a pilot project to increase access to justice for marginalized groups and to provide support to clients as they navigate the justice system.
“I would 100% recommend this service. Not everyone will decide to hire a lawyer, so having a volunteer sit beside you at a hearing makes you feel really supported.”
“Overall, the accompaniment was great.”
“The initial interaction with a volunteer on the phone was really helpful.”
